Grand Theft Auto 1 Cars

A few years ago I was quite into Grand Theft Auto 1 mods. The number of mods possible are endless, you can create missions using text, create maps using specific programs and, one of the main forms of modification, change the car sprites.

There is a very specific style to GTA1 cars, the shading almost has specific rules and styles attached to it. Like you can see the lighting coming from the bottom left and the bright highlight darkening to the top right. Except for the Peugeot 206 (2nd row 4th from the left) which is actually a GTA2 car which also has it’s own specific style.

Basically it’s pixel art with the help of the smudge tool and it’s alot harder than it looks (or maybe that’s just because I was inexperienced). This was basically my introduction to Paint Shop Pro (and later Photoshop) and i guess digital art in general.
